Tenebrae is Latin for 'shadows'. This is a quiet service of readings prayers and music. A candle is extinguished for every reading, reminding us of how everyone rejected Jesus and ran away on the night before his crucifixion. When the service is over, we leave the church in darkness.

Thursday, April 18 - Maundy Thursday
7:00 p.m. Holy Eucharist, Foot Washing and Stripping of the Altar:
This night we remember how Jesus gave us the Eucharist (the meal of bread and wine) on the night he was arrested by the Roman soldiers. We wash one another's feet as a remembrance of how he served his friends by washing their feet. After the celebration of the meal, the altar is stripped and all decorations in the church are removed. This reminds us of how alone Jesus was as he went out to the garden of Gethsemane.
